What is the relevance of the Psalms, they are 3000 years old? As 21st century Christians, we have our own songs, our own poems. The Psalms have been sung by the Church since they were written by David and the other Psalmists. Week by week, and day by day the Church sings the glory and praise of God in the words of the Bible, the Psalms. Through the Psalms God describes the life of the Church, how she should pray, worship, and sing. Through the Psalms the Father describes His Son, His Son's suffering, death, and resurrection. The Church rejoices with the saints of the Old and New Testaments. The Liturgy finds it focus and flow of the Liturgy is from Christ who was crucified for us. The Psalms lead the Church in the worship of Christ and Him Crucified. Psalms 120-134 are called the Songs of the Ascents. These Psalms describe the life of the Church as she travels from exile to the presence of God in the Divine Service. The Psalms describe the Church's plight in this world and her confidence in Christ. The Songs of the Ascents describe the travel of the Children of Israel from their homes to the Temple for the Great Feasts of Israel. They describe for the Church the travel of her children from their day to day lives, corrupted by sin, into the Divine Service where forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are found. These gifts of God are given through the Pure Word, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper. The Church finds hope and confidence in the Psalms which God wrote for His people through the Prophets and Saints of the Old Testament.
