Medical assistant professions in crisis situations

This study investigates whether there is a conflict between the subjective experience of everyday working life and the professional role model of doctors during the Greek financial crisis and, if so, how this conflict is described by those affected. The theoretical background revealed that the economic, social and cultural problems of the Greek financial crisis have a significant impact on the healthcare system. Medical support professions play an essential role in this context, as they are considered part of a community of shared destiny and have to contend with a discrepancy between their capabilities and their actions, since on the one hand they are obliged by their role model to help all patients, and on the other hand they are limited in their ability to help due to various problems. To investigate the research question, eight doctors employed in public or private institutions during the crisis were interviewed.
