Intrigue In Saliya

Colonel Charles Russell saves the life in London of a visiting head of an Arab state. The visiter is an old friend and currently the president of a country which has a threatening neighbor, Saliya, whose agents are trying to kill him. Soon after this incident, Russell himself is invited to visit a small island state by a former subordinate.It develops that the small state needs Russell's help in preventing an invasion by Saliya.The plot moves quickly and along the way we meet Concerta who is a butcher by trade. She is forty years old with a striking appearance. Although not a native Saliyan, she still manages to gain the favor of the Crown of Saliya. Her one outstanding flaw is a vengeful spirit.THE MEDIAN LINE is a very entertaining novel of foreign intrigue and Haggard is an excellent writer.

Political Intrigue

William Haggard wrote many novels about international politics at the highest levels, almost always featuring Colonel Charles Russell. In this story Russell has long been retired from his career as head of the Security Executive, a military intelligence operation. Coincidentally, the author by this time had also been similarly retired from a military and government career in England and India. Above all this book is about political intrigue. The plot is uncomplicated. It helps that there are only a few players and you can see the playing field clearly.
