Measuring Delinquency

By Travis Hirschi, Michael J. Hindelang, Joseph G. Weis

The authors of Measuring Delinquency set out to reconcile delinquency as measured by self reports in etiologic research, with delinquency as traditionally represented in criminal justice statistics. Measuring Delinquency reports in painful detail an attempt to reconcile two radically disparate views of the distribution of juvenile delinquency in society, each rooted in the results derived from a particular approach to measuring delinquency...The findings reported by Hindelang, Hirschi, and Weiss should be important to anyone concerned with policies regarding juvenile delinquency. The story told is a cautionary tale for anyone who relies on social research. -- Michigan Law Review, March 1982
