No Customer Reviews
Proceedings of a session at the ASCE National Convention, held in Nashville, Tennessee. Sponsored by the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains seven papers that document the field performance of shallow foundations. Several papers discuss foundation settlements caused by the compression of the subsoil and evaluate laboratory and in situ tests as tools for the prediction of settlements. The initial settlements of overconsolidated soils are discussed. Two papers consider the primary consolidation settlements of soft clayey soils as well as settlements due to secondary consolidation of organic clayey soils are also covered. One paper also considers the settlements of granular soils with large contents of fines. Foundation movements associated with expansive soils are documented, including settlements caused by the recompression of the heave of highly plastic clays and modification of the pavement roughness as it is altered by the installation of several types of vertical moisture barriers.
