In the very limited window we get into his life and ministry, Jesus shows up at a lot of meals. It might have been nice if the disciples had included the menu or recipes in a few places. Sometimes Jesus fries up some breakfast, sometimes he furnishes the wine, and sometimes he multiplies a single lunch to feed the masses. And other times he simply shows up and partakes while people serve him. In all these cases, we witness Jesus sharing meals with others. In fact, the only time we witness him fasting, is when he is alone. He fasts alone and feasts in community. We get to see Jesus enjoying fast food and fine dining. He seems to know how to use every fork and also how to grab a sandwich on the fly. And in each case, he makes the most of every opportunity. Meals can be incredibly intimate - where we let our hair down and share our hearts with others. Meals can be incredibly revealing - the people we choose to sit and eat with says something about us. Jesus knew that and used every chance he got to lower someone's defenses so that he could touch their heart. We shouldn't be surprised that many experienced life-change while dining with Jesus. In a world where hospitality has taken a back seat to drive-throughs and restaurants, what can we learn about the importance of eating together? We may not be able to turn water into wine, but we can use the necessity of physical nourishment to open someone's heart to Jesus. How can we make the most of every opportunity?
