This is a fantastic book. The story is a retrospective narration of a violent incident that occurred when the narrator (who shares the same first name of the author) was an adolescent and how this event affected his life and the lives of his close friends (Los Jatac) more than twenty years later. The story relates the past to the present and reminds us that the two are inextricably linked. I found myself having great difficulty putting this book down. Spanish is my second language, but I found the writing to be fairly straightforward and what words I did not know I could get from context. There was a little difficulty separating diaglogue from narration because the author does not separate them out with puncutation, but after awhile I got the hang of it. Reading this book was both an educational experience as well as an entertaining and thought-provoking exercise. I noticed that the book is dedicated to the same people who comprise Los Jatac in the story, which makes me wonder whether the story or any part of it is true. That I would like to know. I would also like to know if Carlos Peramo has written anything else. This author has a LOT of talent. I highly recommend this book.
