Book Overview

FINALIST FOR THE 2021 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE'S LITERATURE A debut YA novel-in-verse by Amber McBride, Me (Moth) is about a teen girl who is grieving the deaths of her family, and a teen boy who crosses her path. Moth has lost her family in an accident. Though she lives with her aunt, she feels alone and uprooted. Until she meets Sani, a boy who is also searching for his roots. If he knows more about where he comes from, maybe he'll be able to understand his ongoing depression. And if Moth can help him feel grounded, then perhaps she too will discover the history she carries in her bones. Moth and Sani take a road trip that has them chasing ghosts and searching for ancestors. The way each moves forward is surprising, powerful, and unforgettable. Here is an exquisite and uplifting novel about identity, first love, and the ways that our memories and our roots steer us through the universe.

The 2nd book I've read from Amber McBride, and she's still my fave author.

I considered Amber McBride as my favorite author immediately after reading 'We Are All So Good At Smiling'. It was my 1st time reading a book with Black characters that vividly deals with depression, and in such a graceful way. I planned to read all McBride books afterwards, but found it necessary to read after my mother passed away a few months ago. I don't know if 'comforting' is the correct word to use, but I think reading of Moth's depression and grief during her time of loss helped me hold space for my own. I loved all the details about Sani's indigineous roots. I adore the love story between Moth and Sani. And as someone deconstructing from institutionalized Christianity, I loved learning of Hoodoo and every bit of history. The ending was so unexpected and made me well up with tears... Truly, such beautiful writing. Definitely recommend for those dealing with grief and/or depression - even if you have to take breaks every now and then when it hits hard.
