Mayhem in Mogadishu, Somalia 1991-94

Mayhem in Mogadishu is a vivid exploration of the United Nations' ill-fated intervention in Somalia during the early 1990s - a mission aiming to provide humanitarian relief that quickly descended into urban warfare, political chaos and international outrage.

In response to a collapsing state plagued by famine, lawlessness and civil war, the world intervened under the banners of UNOSOM I and later, the more forceful UNOSOM II. The key players of this effort were the United States, initially welcomed as saviours under Operation RESTORE HOPE in December 1992.

At the centre of the storm stood Muhammad Farah Aidid, leader of the Somalian National Alliance and principal Somalian dissident, who outmanoeuvred US and UN forces at every turn. The goodwill produced by RESTORE HOPE quickly evaporated and the Pakistani contingent of UNOSOM II was attacked on 3 June 1993, resulting in twenty-six deaths.

The situation soon worsened when US Special Forces set out to avenge their Pakistani comrades. 'Bloody Monday' resulted in the killing of 70 civilians and was met with universal disgust, earning America the unqualified hatred of the very people it had come to help.

Through sharp analysis and detailed research, the author explains the unravelling of a mission gone wrong. He explores not only what happened - but why - and points to the misjudgements that turned a peacekeeping effort into a geopolitical fiasco.

Mayhem in Mogadishu is a sobering reflection on power, intervention and the limits of military might in the face of complex human crises.
