To earn income, she was a part-time creative writing instructor at the Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) in Springfield, and became a founding member of the Missouri State Poetry Society in 1997. As a stand-up comic poet, she was known as "Professor Parrott," but is best-known as co-founder of the National Annual Senior Poet Laureate Poetry Competition for American Poets aged 50 and older.
