Maxine Grant has been teased for her dark chocolate complexion since she was a child. Unfortunately, most of the insults were from people only a few shades lighter than she was. However, Maxine embraced everything about herself, from her complexion to her beautiful locs. But sometimes, even the strongest woman needs assurance.

Maurice Palmer loves Maxine with all his heart, just not openly. Maurice fell for Maxine in college. However, his mother wishes he had chosen differently. Ms. Palmer's biggest concern was Maxine's complexion. After years of ignoring his mother's comments, he was now stuck between what he wanted and what his mother preferred.

Nicolas "Nico" Campbell has been enjoying the single life. He isn't interested in love or a relationship. His grandfather is convinced that he just hasn't found the right woman. Nico's response was because he wasn't looking. Then Maxine, his sister-in-law's best friend, enters his small, protected family circle. Something in her eyes makes Nico want to protect Maxine as well.

Maxine grows tired of her on-again, off-again relationship with Maurice. After overhearing a conversation between Maurice and his mother, Maxine realizes that she needs to protect her peace. The question was whether Maurice would bow out gracefully, or if he needed some encouragement from Nico.
