Good Reference

This is a very good book for reference. It combines articles the author has used, by permission I assume. At first I didn't read the book, but when stuck on a topic it came in very handy. It has much information if your willing to dig for it.

The Best for serious programmers

If you want to go in advance in Java code you must buy this book. It'll teach you more than the basics techs. It contains very helpful and worthy informations.

Still the best Java book for advanced topics

After spending far too much time at the bookstore, I have concluded that Maximum Java 1.1 still beats out the other 'advanced' books for its coverage of Native Methods, RMI, advanced GUI, JDBC, multithreading, etc. If you already know the basics of Java, this is the only book you need for serious development.

The best book for the Java expert who wants to learn more

It is unique in that it is aimed at people who already know Java, but want advanced material on numerous different topics (by comparsion, "Advanced Java" is pretty focused. It does meet this aim. It won't be a book you'll read from cover to cover. Most likely, you'll initially read one or two chapters. Then you'll put it on your shelf until you need to read about one of the other topics in this book. Some examples of the topics covered are Modifying the Security Manager, Native Methods, and Factory Objects. I haven't seen another book covering any of these topics. Unlike many books that claim Java 1.1, this one has been fully updated for Java 1.1. Many new chapters are Java 1.1 specific in fact. This is the best book on the market for the advanced Java programmer.
