Hesan is a typical Mayan kid. He has an annoying little brother, a pet jaguar, and a favorite hunting spear. But besides that, he's definitely not normal. His ancestor by the same name is a legendary figure who was given the power to control time, called "maxaqtacca". Hesan doesn't want to believe that his life is dictated by anything or anyone other than himself, but soon strange aberrations occur that he can't explain. On top of that, the Spaniard, Hernando Cortez, brings his soldiers and conquers the neighboring Aztec civilization. Now that they have extinguished the Aztecs entirely, the Mayans are next. This threat comes straight to Hesan's village when he inadvertently captures a scout from the Spanish army. A string of wacky and intense events plays out, and with conquistadors, collisions, and cranky old ladies, Hesan is caught up in a plot to fight Cortez and save the Maya.
