Max had been sitting at the bottom of the cellar steps, in complete darkness, for he didn't know how many hours when he heard the bolt high above him rattle. Light flooded down into his filthy, smelly prison and, turning towards it, he felt a shiver of apprehension as he saw the unmistakable silhouette of his stepdad filling the doorway. 'You comin' out or what, you little shit?' Max Pilling is eleven years old. He lives with his mum, who is a drug addict, and stepdad number three, who hates him. When he is finally allowed out of the cellar where he has spent most of the day, Max's stepdad forces his mum to choose: who stays and who goes? His mum doesn't choose Max.
