Mavericks
Half Moon Bay was once San Benito. Then Spanishtown, the town of the ones who hadn't left yet. Until the families lost their land to a paper written in English, and somebody gave the place a postcard name so nobody would remember who it had been.
January 2026. The buoy reads twenty seconds and the whole town changes its mood. It's coming on, the texts say before dawn. Mavericks, the wave that breaks half a mile out, is standing up bigger than it has in years, and the bluff fills with trucks, thermoses, and long lenses. The Ritz sells the view at a hundred dollars a glass, on the land that used to be the Ortegas'. The harbor families pay for ice, fuel, and silence. And that same week, a winter swell hands back the body of Cal Brant, the photographer who spent twenty years getting paid to shoot other people's risk, against the inside rocks of the jetty. The county wants to close it as a surf accident. So does the town. An accident runs cheaper than a murder.
Pilar Ortega mends the wetsuits of the same men who nod at her in the lineup and never sit with her. She hasn't crossed the harbor mouth since the winter of 2004, the winter they filed her away as the one who froze. But she can read water the way she reads a seam. She knows who lied that week by the way a suit smells, and she knows a man in that suit doesn't end up on the inside of the jetty on his own. The ocean doesn't lie. The ones who read it backward on purpose do.
The killer is no genius. He's someone from town, with a son, a shame, and something ordinary to lose. And he used the one thing that never takes the stand out here: the sea, which is grave and alibi at once.
Because in this town, the woman with the Spanish last name who saw too much doesn't get killed. She gets turned into a witch.
