Matthew Reconsidered: The Samantha Davidova Library Book 9

" The Narrow Path"- A Brief Exposition of the Gospel of Matthew Written by Samantha Davidova (December 2024, January 2025) Matthew Chapter 1 The gospel of Matthew recounts the story of Jesus concisely in twenty eight chapters containing an extended teaching section commonly known as "the Sermon on the Mount" and a long tirade against the Jewish religious leaders of Jesus'' own day exposing their hypocrisy in the twenty third chapter as well as some parables unique only to Matthew''s account such as in his twenty fifth chapter the two parables of the Foolish Virgins and of the Sheep and the Goats. And so commencing our brief exposition at the commencement of the opening first chapter the Davidic and Abrahamic descent of Jesus'' paternal ancestry is given in the first chapter in the first seventeen verses, it being noted particularly in verse 17 that there had been fourteen generations from Abraham to David and from David to the Babylonian captivity a further fourteen and from that event to Christ''s birth a final third group of fourteen generations culminating in Matthew''s nativity story that fills the rest of the first and second chapters. God had made promises to both Abraham and David concerning their offspring and now the arrival of Christ upon the scene represented a fulfillment of those promises God having promised Abraham that his seed or offspring would inherit the land (i.e. of Israel) with him which promise was not fulfilled in Abraham''s lifetime according to Stephen''s preaching in Acts 7:5 from which fact it is argued that it is yet to be fulfilled post-resurrectionally in Abraham''s case for God had promised him that he personally would inherit it forever with his seed requiring Abraham''s physical resurrection and immortalization to fulfill these conditions and his seed Jesus Christ in the singular as argued in Galatians 3:16 his redeemer in making his resurrection a tangible possibility in relation to him with whom he will then subsequently inherit the land together (Hebrews 11:13; 39-40). As concerns the promise to David that is recorded in 2nd Samuel 7:12-17 the prophet Nathan declaring that whereas he would not build God a house to dwell in in Jerusalem God however would build him a house consisting of a royal dynasty in which one particular offspring would be distinguished as establishing David''s throne forever (or "for or to the hidden period" in Hebrew literally either referring to the Millennial rule of Christ and his saints described in Revelation 5:10; 20:4 or to that period or "age beyond" when God would be "all in all" in 1st Corinthians 15:28 the duration of which appearing undefinable so that in relation to the language of a king ruling the former sense is more likely as according to the usual use of the preposition "ad " in Hebrew meaning "to" the hidden period for it is evident that in the final abolition of sin and death upon earth there will be no more mortal subjects for Christ''s government to rule over and we are left with the infinite presence of God upon earth in all men in whom he is equally present as they are conformed to his will without rulership or authority of any kind conceivable once that final epoch has been reached). Then with regard to the circumstances of Christ''s birth the narrative begins in verse 18 that Mary the mother of Jesus was found by her espoused husband Joseph to be pregnant out of wedlock who herself was presumably a descendant of David being of the tribe of Judah like Joseph her husband according to Numbers 36:1-10 and Jesus being physically descended from David only literally through his mother although the birthline was reckoned through the Father''s lineage in accordance with the prophecy foretold to king David that his descendant would be both Son of David and Son of God in 2nd Samuel 7:12, 14 it so coming to pass through his descendress Mary that God impregnated her to directly conceive.
