Classic

Another classic of the genre. Lin and Segel are demigods of the math textbook world. If you want to know what hard math is useful for in the REAL WORLD: this is the book. Beware: this is not for the layperson.

a superb treatment of graduate-level applied mathematics

This is surely one of the best if not the best applied mathematics text on topics related to continuum mechanics. The chapters on approximation and scale and dimensional analysis are clear, concise and very well motivated from a physical standpoint. The text emphasizes that physical insight and approximation go hand in hand toward the goal of understanding. It would be very useful to have an occasional digression onto numerical methods, but as it stands the text is a classic. I hope it never goes out of print!
