Once upon a time, there was a water master who would retreat into seclusion every year for deep meditation. His youngest disciple, Xiao Ji, grew intensely curious and couldn't resist sneaking a peek at what the master was doing during his retreat. To his astonishment, the room was filled with water--but the master was nowhere to be seen. Xiao Ji tossed a small stone into the water, yet the master still didn't appear. When the master finally emerged from his retreat, he looked troubled, clutching his stomach as if something inside him caused discomfort. The master called Xiao Ji aside and questioned him. Xiao Ji admitted to throwing the stone. The master did not blame him, only asking him to retrieve the stone next time. When the master entered seclusion again, Xiao Ji saw a room filled with clear water and heard the master's gentle voice echoing from within.
