The earliest humans settled in Massachusetts around 3,000 years ago. European explorers began roving the coast around the 11th century, and in 1497, John Cabot completed his famous voyages that led to the claim of England to North America. In 1630, the Pilgrims made their way from England to the New World, hoping to find religious freedom. They stopped briefly in Provincetown before settling in Plymouth. The Wampanoag Chief Massasoit signed the first treaty in New Hampshire in December 1620, and the Pilgrims eventually became a state.
