While staying at Aunt Betsy's where neither she nor her dog seem to do anything right, Mary Sue and her dog go out for a walk, find a large hollow stump with a ladder going down, and soon find themselves in an unusual sort of land. Even more unusual, everyone seems to know them as Mary the Marvelous and Perfect Pooch and are so glad they have come to help King Dindy with the Trouble. Mary Sue is not sure she can help, but she thinks it would be interesting to meet a King. And so starts her adventure in a land full of surprises, some more pleasant than others.
