Two Model Lives

What a brilliant idea to write a book about a married couple, intertwining as Mr. Rohe has done the philosophies and public service of both John and Mary Lou Tanton. While most of us quote the truism that `Behind every great man is a great woman,' this treatment makes it clear that their marriage allowed a synergistic effect, with each person greater together than either would be separately. Many aspects of this book are provocative. Is it due to the evolutionary selection process that true leaders like the Tantons are so rare? "Conscience selects against itself," and "genes that predispose one to concern for distant generations rather than day-to-day survival have less chance to survive into the next generation." I also ponder Mr. Rohe's rhetorical question, Would the Catholic Church be so obstinate about its ban on birth control if prolific Irishmen had not been able to emigrate? Throughout, Mr. Rohe skillfully treats the Tantons' agrarian roots with the intertwined social issues of human overpopulation and immigration that the Tantons have been brave enough to address at great personal cost.I highly recommend both reading this book and modeling your living after this couple.

Mary Lou and John Tanton:Journey Into American Conservation

This book offers the tenacity and tenderness of John Muir, the power of Wallace Stegner, love of nature via Thoreau and the courage of Edward Abbey. It's a must read for anyone concerned about the future of this planet, America and all our children. I gained greater courage and conviction from reading the steadfastness of John and Mary Lou Tanton. They stand with the great patriots who made this country a beacon to the world. They are beacons for ecological balance and responsibility to future generations. Frosty Wooldridge, Author 'SRIKE THREE!TAKE YOUR BASE'and world bicycle adventurer.

Two incredible people.

John and Mary Lou Tanton are incredible people who have accomplished great things. John Rohe's unusual biography of them is not only inspiring and instructive--it's also fun to read. Joan Wolfe, author of MAKING THINGS HAPPEN: How to be an Effective Volunteer (out of print).

Mary Lou & John Taton: A journey Into American Conservation

The Tanton's biography is a charming heartfelt tribute by John F. Rohe, to a husband and wife, who, while having busy careers, always devoted time to make a constructive difference in the conservation and quality of our universe. The reader will be entertained, informed, and inspired to be a better conservationist. Richard M. Shuster, Retired Circuit Judge, 5th Judicial Circuit Court, Barry County, Michigan
