Did these changes lead to a retreat from the free market towards a more democratic society, orientated around Marxist ideas? In how far does Marx's heritage still play a role in the modern construction of society? The book gives a short overview over the development of socialist democracy and analyzes articles of the newspaper "People's Daily", the main daily publication of the party, concerning democracy in modern China. Furthermore, it compares the idea of democracy popularized in society on the one side and as developed by the philosopher Karl Marx on the other; taking into account the concept that problems in society repeat themselves and take place according to a historical pattern.
