Reviewed by Cindy Lynn Jacobs for Reader Reviews (10/06) "Marty and the Motorcycles" is wonderfully illustrated book aimed to nurture both fun and safety aspects of motorcycling. Marty, a young boy who ages from three to nine in just 28 pages, inherits a love for motorcycles from his parents. Marty talks about tricks he learns with his regular bike to help prepare him for the day he owns his own dirt bike. He also rides with his family on motorcycles in parades, as well as in the fields. His friend owns a BMX track and Marty practices his jumps, tight corners and straight-a-ways as much as possible. And, of course, Marty races with his friends! While the illustrations help teach children safety and about different motorcycles, the story itself is a bit random. The author highlights Marty's birthdays, where he received his first bike at age three; then, he received a new bike on his fifth birthday. On his eighth birthday, he shows his parents the tricks he's learned. "Marty and the Motorcycles" may be ideal for children possessing a true interest in two-wheelers. However, I felt the story lacked interest and action that would capture the attention of children with other interests.
