Mercer Loughty is a bio-remediation specialist-a fancy term for a man who cleans up what the dead leave behind. He is used to the smell of decay, the stains of violence, and the crushing weight of hoarded memories. But when he is hired to clear out the condemned estate of the reclusive Eudora Klove in the sweltering Louisiana swamplands, he finds a filth that defies explanation.
The house is packed floor-to-ceiling with wet newspapers, rotting meat, and thousands of porcelain dolls glued together with a translucent, honey-smelling resin. But the pile is warm. It vibrates with a low, rhythmic thrumming that sounds suspiciously like breathing.
As Mercer digs tunnels through the refuse, the house begins to close in. He hears the voice of a crying child deep in the walls, but his equipment registers no heat signatures. The geometry of the trash tunnels is too perfect, designed for ventilation rather than accumulation. And the deeper he goes, the more he realizes that Eudora Klove isn't missing. She has been repurposed.
Trapped in a home that has become a living, digesting organism, Mercer must confront a hive mind that has learned to mimic human distress to lure fresh meat. In the Marrowbone Tenement, the cleaning crew doesn't take out the trash-they become it.
