Marriage: Theology and reality

A Christian ideal of marriage has been presented and taught from earliest times. But have the theologians who taught it ever really understood enough of the reality of marriage? Churchspeak about marriage can often have an alien ring about it when considered in the light of the daily life of average married couples. Is hearing that a marriage is a sign or symbol of God's love, of the unity of Christ and the Church, at all relevant to the ups and downs of the shared existence that marriage is? Surely, the joys and difficulties, the happy times and the traumas, are the same for everyone, and religion or the absence of it has very little if anything to do with the real issues?
