Marooned In The New World

This is the story of a Jeremiah Carpenter, a sixteen year-old who is marooned in North Carolina in 1601. He has lost his father, and is taken captive by a Native American warrior of the Pomeioc. He begins as a slave, and must endure the hardships visited upon him by all and sundry in the village. All but one. She is the daughter of English people, who has been adopted by the chief of the village. She will help him if she can, but she is even younger than he, and is already being prepared for betrothal. Jeremiah (Jem) keeps his mission in mind: "Befriend the natives, learn their language, and speak on our behalf to them when we come back for you!" While he learns the ways and the language of the Pomeioc, he also learns about the many villages that occupy the Pamlico Sound, the Chesepeake, and the surrounding territories. He begins to understand the Runapewak's (The People) way of life, and to contrast it with his Wutashuntar (Stranger) ways.
His life takes a strange twist, and he finds himself in increasingly dire circumstances. He is deceiving the people of the village, and plotting to return the English girl to her family, if he can. And then, there is a major conflict between the People and Strangers, who have destroyed a village of the Mattawoman. The great chief of the Powhatan calls all the villages to come and fight the invaders. Will Jem be true to his new Pomeioc family, or will he betray them to the Strangers?
The epic conflict tests Jem's resolve and turns his life in a new direction, once again. As he learns these life lessons, Jem also puts together what might have happened to the ill-fated Roanoke Colony and its occupants. The answer comes gradually, as he meets and befriends the warriors and traders in different villages who will become his guides. But he now has a warning for them: "The Wutashuntar are coming!"
