MBOS features paintings by Richard Ellis and Winslow Homer, photographs of tall ships rounding Cape Horn,and tales of fishes like Protopterus annectens, the African lungfish -- an obligate air-breather that will drown if its head is held underwater. It is rare among marine texts in that it covers both marine science (water chemistry, plate tectonics, salinity, pressure, tides, waves, etc.), marine ecology, as well as a phylogenetic survey of the major marine phyla. It also offers a unique and creative treatment of marine topics, including accounts of the voyages of Magellan, Columbus, and the HMS Challenger, and, among others, the contributions of Eratosthenes, Bartholomew Dias, William Dampier, and Vasco da Gama. It would be nice to see Marine Biology and Ocean Science in print once again.
