Marie-Jos phe resented her bondage and was labelled as rebellious. It was not uncommon to see her fiery temper, stubbornness and headstrong personality; all too often she spoke out against her masters. This is her story - a woman enslaved at birth.
Her desire for freedom was so strong that it burned deeply within her soul. Her passion was to regain her identity, to be unshackled and return to her homeland.

Much of Marie-Jos phe's life is not exactly known until the time she was taken to Montr al. Born 1705 and transported across the Atlantic at the age of 16, she was sold in New England. In 1725, at the age of 20, she was sold once again and taken to Montr al.
