Maribel and the BIG wonder: Cards for Diego

By Katelynn Grace

Maribel Luna begins each morning the same way, by choosing two wonderfully mismatched socks and tucking her beloved Wonder Journal into her backpack. She believes that every day holds something curious, something magical, something worth wondering about. But when Maribel twirls into her classroom one morning and discovers her friend Diego's desk suddenly empty, her "something magical" feeling turns into a "something's-not-right" wiggle. Diego hasn't moved away. He isn't sick. He's simply... gone.

With help from her best friend Theo, her steady teacher Ms. Maple, and the warmth of her Abuela's stories, Maribel starts asking big questions brave questions. Questions that don't always have easy answers. When she learns Diego's family has been taken away by immigration authorities, Maribel feels a swirl of sadness, confusion, and hope. She pours her feelings into her Wonder Journal and leads her class in making colorful cards to send Diego proof that kindness can travel even when people cannot.

Maribel and the Big Wonder: Cards for Diego gently introduces children to topics of belonging, justice, and the power of compassion. With mismatched socks, a brave heart, and a journal full of questions, Maribel shows that even small acts of kindness can shine brightly in the face of difficult truths.

Perfect for families, classrooms, and anyone helping children navigate the world with curiosity, courage, and care.
