The true story of Margaret Garner, a slave who murdered her young daughter to spare her the brutality and indignity of growing up in bondage, has been told in fiction and an 1867 painting. In this book Margaret Garner is brought back to life in poetry through the clever blending of imagination and the subject's own words. This interpretation of her experiences between about 1834 and 1858 adds an important new layer to the understanding of slavery. The poems are preceded by the editor's foreword which summarizes the story of Margaret and her family. The book itself is written in a diary fashion, each poem paired with a description and a date, which are italicized in placed in the upper right hand corner of the page. Margaret won the 2008 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award.
