This novel is based on a true story of Marcus Attilius a man who lived and is regarded as arguably the greatest gladiator in Roman history. His exploits are shown in graffiti on the Nocerian Gate at the Southern end of the Pompeii ruins to this very day.
This novel, the second in the series, chronicles his life before he was crowned First Gladiator of Rome.
Marcus serves six years as a legionnaire in the Fifth Legion in Judea fighting at the sacking of Jerusalem and Masada. He returns to Rome and re-joins the Ludus Gallica gladiator school in Rome to train as a Novo (novice) gladiator to fight on the sand of the arenas of Rome under the tutelage of Aetius, the Lanista of the school.As a Tiro (first year gladiator) Marcus defeats the primus gladiator of Rome, Hilarus at Pompeii. Wanting vengeance against Masanus, a champion of Rome, who had brutally beaten a gladiator from his school, he agrees to return to Pompeii and a contest with Masanus at the revered arena.
The following morning Mount Vesuvius erupts, spewing it contents over Pompeii as Marcus and the members of the gladiator school hurriedly leave the Pompeii barracks and flee the city. As chaos descends. Marcus decides to return to search for his friend Felix, as the destruction of Pompeii continues around him in the hope of finding him and escaping the maelstrom that falls on Pompeii and Herculaneum.
