Since the earliest days of the camera, Marblehead, Massachusetts has been a photogenic town. In the late Victorian Era, a young photographer named Fred Litchman captured its historic buildings, ocean views, and timeless charm. Litchman opened a photo studio and set out to document the people and places that made Marblehead the town he loved. Fred captured Marblehead at a pivotal time in its history, as locals created a seaside vacation mecca from the ashes of two devastating fires. The photos form a crucial historical record of a town unfiltered. Marblehead Snapshots: The World of Fred Litchman features 139 of the 3,000 photographs in the Marblehead Museum collection taken by Litchman from the 1890s to World War I. It is based on an exhibition displayed in the Marblehead Museum from 2023-2024.
