Best Possible Basic Text for Access 2003

This text is special not just because it was illustrated by the Maran Family -- there is at least one other text I have seen that was illustrated by the Marans but written by someone else -- but because Ruth Maran wrote it. I run a 36 field relational database using Access 2003, one I had to set up from scratch using a blank database, and this text was the only one I needed to make my system work like a dream! Highly recommanded!

A Wonderful Task-Oriented Book

I specifically sought out this Maran book because of their visual task-oriented approach. As others have stated, it is NOT an in-depth reference book; it was not designed to be. The whole concept behind task-oriented documentation is to tell the user the steps to follow to accomplish a task without burdening them with the requirement to first learn all of the underlying theory, functions, etc. In this regard, the Maran Illustrated series excels. That said, there are dozens of other books that spend thousands of words talking about all of the theory, features, menus, etc. of Access without ever getting around to telling readers how to accomplish anything with Access. If clear, concise task-oriented instructions are something you dislike, then this is NOT the book for you!

Great Reference Book

This book is not for someone that wants to be a serious MS Access developer. However, if you want to learn the basics, or if you have learned the basics but want to have a reference to refresh your memory six months down the road when you actually go to do something with Access then this book is top notch. We have all been there. We take a class or do a tutorial to learn a new application but by the time we actually need to use it we've forgotten the information. That is what makes the Maran books great. They are so visual that once you look something up in the index or contents and head to the page you will immediately begin to remember how to complete the task.
