Manure Occurs

Manure Occurs is a partial record of of my experiences with what I consider to be memorable individuals over the course of a forty year timeline. Most characters depicted likely would not be socially acceptable by contemporary standards, and probably the motivation for my interest in them. I believe the explanation for the attraction to this variety of temperament is my inability to feel appropriate within the world enveloping me. I never seemed to fit in very well, and always appeared a bit odd to others I think. The sort of person described in these encounters was usually much more out of step with humanity than myself, so interaction with them made me feel ordinary by comparison. Each chapter is different, but also similar by way of the curious behavior of characters involved. In general, the various episodes are not intended to be about myself, but I am a constant presence describing the activities of the many personalities surrounding me, while recounting the details through my perspective. Most occupy one chapter only, but a few return briefly periodically. Many of the goings-on are performed by frequently inebriated bumbling associates attempting to buddy up with one another, as alcohol was often a necessary ingredient for communication to become possible. I think the primary reason that I've chosen to undertake the task at this time is my current realization that life as I knew it is suddenly gone. I'm aware of the public's changing concept of reality over the years, but haven't really been paying attention, probably because I didn't want to. My previous life was reassuringly comfortable occupying space in the midst of people that could be counted on to screw up more often than myself. I'm not likely to determine if people are genuinely all that different now than they were fifty years ago, but it sure seems so. I don't think it's just me longing for a revival of the good old days. My recollection of the past is more of an all in this together attitude, and common courtesy, but that mindset seems to have vanished while I was busy pretending it wasn't happening.
