Mandala Exercises for Wholeness: Journey Inward and Outward

A mandala is a lot more than a mere circle. Did you know it? It is an entire universe contained, a visual laying out of sacred geometry. So, what lies at its heart? A single point, a seed, an anchor of stillness, unknown to the world. But guess what happens From there begins the journey From stillness, complex, harmonious patterns arise as we grow from the inside out. Finally, those patterns explode outward in symmetrical movements.
It gets woven out of consciousness, that is, silently growing and expanding outward, unable to contain itself, and there begins the dance of petals from inside to outside. A tapestry is formed where delicate, repeating geometric shapes, floral petals, and intricate lines layer upon one another. So, what happens through this layering?
They create an enchanting depth that draws us toward the center and the soul toward deep, inner reflection. Then, gazing upon a mandala becomes a guided meditation. That deep gazing then turns into a visual journey from outer layers of chaotic reality to a quiet, inward journey where we finally focus on the serene center of balance and unity.
The mandala then speaks the language of sacred colors, spanning from the deep indigo of mind to the fiery crimson of transformation, all the way to the pure white of serenity. Each petal, each hand-drawn stroke is a conscious step toward, or a deep meditation on the wholeness of the self and the universe. The creation of a mandala then becomes a meditative journey, centering us in our depths, while simultaneously manifesting our communication of the spirit through a full expression outward to this world. Petal mandalas elicit the art and the artist in the soul through growing into higher communication, taking us to a deeply meditative state throughout the journey of creation.
Here comes the sand mandala, to symbolize the impermanence of all things. They are created using colored sand, depicting impermanence through ritual destruction. Thus, the artistic masterpiece, the sand mandala, symbolizes the ultimate paradox that all things are created only to be destroyed. That nothing lasts forever. All things come to an end. Even the best of beauty is wiped out by the waves.
