An enduring book on the management of creative and skilled workers
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
This is a book that is as relevant today as it was when it was originally published in 1985. The topics covered are even more critical in today's world of rapidly changing technologies that demand highly skilled and creative employees. The pressure on managment is to hire, develop and maintain a high peforming professional staff. This book addresses those issues, starting with a chapter on "Hiring: The Most Important Management Decision" and concluding with chapters on "Technical Obsolescence, Burnout, and Staying Alive" and "Creativity." This is a well written book, easy for the reader to digest and understand.
A useful readable book for managers of professionals.

Shapero wrote this based on a lot of real research. It gives those who manage professionals a good set of ideas on what they should be doing. Every friend I have given it to who managed computer types (my industry) found it very useful and quite readable. It's not one of your stuffy books typically written by academics. Al was the only full professor of management at Ohio State who didn't have a PhD. And he occupied an endowed Chair which gives you an idea of how good he was. This was has last work and is one of the best in the field.
