If knowledge is power prepare to be SuperDoc

Tap into the power of Self Efficacy with bibliotherapy. If your patients are seeking a purely pharmacological solution for their migraines, chances are neither they or you will be satisfied. Pills are only part of solution (and in chronic migraine an even smaller part) It is best to think of Migraine as the product of a sensitive nervous system that doesn't manage change well. The best treatments are directed at strengthening the underlying irritable nervous system so that it becomes stable, produces fewer episodes of disabling head pain, and moves towards healing. Migraines are a CHRONIC condition. Your patients didn't just catch migraine for a week. This is why this title and its patient companion book are so important in that it puts the focus on what your patient can do to "Manage" your migraine--so that it doesn't control their lives. In any chronic condition it is important that patients do things on a daily basis to care for their condition. As you know studies show that the more a patient learns about their condition the better they do. So simply put Knowledge is power-What you Know, You can Master!!! For the first time leading headache doctors have collaborated in producing a title on Migraine headaches in two volumes; one for the doctor and one for the patient. Drs Cady, Farmer, Lipton, and Bigal have proposed a system for migraine (based on frequency of attacks and their impact on daily life and outlook) that stages the patients and maps out a course for healing. This allows for targeted interventions based on the patient's current stage. I would recommend using this book in combination with 10 Simple Solutions to Migraines by Dawn Marcus, MD. 10 Simple Solutions will help you learn about your headaches and "Managing Migraines" will teach your patients how to apply that knowledge. And for those patients that only want a pill ask them how bad they want to get better? Or as Sean Connery ask in The Untouchables; "What are you willing to do?" Migraine is always more than 'just a headache'. It deserves to be treated as such.
