Preface to the Second Edition
The present edition of book "Management Control Systems (MCSs)- Concepts and Application", provides text, literature, and case studies for a course in MCSs. This book is about the text and application of MCSs based practices in the Government organization i.e. Punjab State Power Corporation limited (PSPCL). This institution was earlier named as Punjab State Electricity Board when this study was conducted.
The book incorporates basic concepts of MCSs and research study based findings updating those with latest changes made in the organizational structure of the corporation. Along with application of MCSs practices in PSPCL the book also gives theoretical detail on the basic concepts, principles, development process, design and structure of MCS; essential concepts and use of Management Information System; communication and reporting system; performance evaluation in addition to corrective action and maintenance of MCS; and role managers in effective control. The book has been divided into five parts.
Part-I provides the conceptual foundations of management control system and related literature on MCS.
Part-II deals with the scope, principles, design and structure of MCS. Further development process of control system with special reference to management accounting techniques also incorporated in this section.
Part-III talks about the concept and usage of Management Information System (MIS) to support the managerial control practices.
Part-IV incorporates reporting and performance evaluation systems of business organisations. And it discusses the role of manager in effective control with the support of corrective action and maintenance of MCS.
Part-V presents current look of PSPCL, as now it is reconstructed by dividing into Powercom and Transco companies.
In addition to text material, this book contains thirty five case studies drawn from various departments of PSPCL. These studies based research work illustrate the managerial control phenomenon as well as application of MCS practices in Punjab State power Corporation.
