Randolph Scott, a college-educated Virginia gentleman who took up motion-picture acting as a lark, found himself typed as a Western leading man in the early 1930s and became a genre icon. Legendary director Henry Hathaway is best known for directing John Wayne in numerous Western classics such as his Oscar winning performance in True Grit (1969). Some of his most notable films include Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935), The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951), Niagara (1953) and The Sons of Katie Elder (1965).
