Man of Dawn: Vernon Bellecourt Wabun-Inini

Vernon Bellecourt, Wabun-Inini was a leader in establishing Native American rights in the 20th-21st centuries. This book honors those efforts. Released in October, 2021 (Wild Embers Press), Man of Dawn is a tribute to the life of Vernon Bellecourt (1931-2007), an Anishinaabe father and outspoken leader within the American Indian Movement (AIM) from the early 1970's until his death in 2007. In her Introduction to this book, Bellecourt's daughter, Denise Bellecourt Levy tells poignant stories of her 1970's childhood with an activist father and her own current efforts to carry on his work for "the People". Man of Dawn offers an honest view of life inside Indian Country, both currently and in retrospect.

Included in Man of Dawn are several written commentaries and letters by Bellecourt--including writings to Winona LaDuke and Ralph Nader--and a controversial 2000 interview between Bellecourt and freelance journalist antoinette nora claypoole. An appendix includes copies of FBI files, AIM trial court testimonies and editorials by Bellecourt.

This book especially tends to the memory and brutal circumstances of the 1975/6 murder of Anna Mae Aquash, M'ikmaq from Nova Scotia. Member of AIM and mother of two children. Bellecourt was head of security in AIM during those early years of AIM. Man of Dawn Wabun-Inini is part of the "Anna Mae Aquash" series and honors all Native Nations. Proceeds of the sales of this book go to the Bellecourt family.
