If you are interested in Eastern Sierra history, Gold and Silver mining, turn-of-the-century Western life or Paiute culture you should really read this book. It is first-hand account, written by his daughter, of a man who was born and lived around the shores of Mono Lake California in the early 1900s. I found this book excellent because: - It contains tons of historical information that could only be gleaned from first-hand memoirs. - It documents the very exciting and interesting life of this man and his family. - Many cultures populate the environment: Italian, Basque, Paiute, Mexican, Swiss and American. - Most important, this books brings you accurate glimpses of day-to-day life in late 1800- early 1900's Western life. Most books, while documenting events, migrations and places, fail to inform the reader how people's actual lives transpired. You get a sense of what they ate, where the slept, how the dealt with neighbors and relatives and their relation with the greater world. I highly recommend this book.
