From the first paragraph I was hooked. The characters and their stories are so real, so so sad and incredibly touching all at the same time.It is quite confronting but takes you on an amazing journey with many twists and turns along the way.The author clearly has experienced life in an Australian country town. Her descriptions are spot on as are her observations of people and places.I felt like I was there.I didn't want it to end. No other book has made me actually cry, sometimes happy sometimes sad tears. The first time I read it, I was consumed by it.Every year or so I read it again and love it just as much. Now it is on my Kindle I have it with me all the time. Easily the best book I have ever read. What an amazing storyteller Joy Dettman is.

This book is the sequel to "Henry's Daughter". My only criteria for reading a book is that it is absolutely unputdownable. Both books meet this criteria. The stories are rich, detailed, superbly written and just soooo satisfying. Have bought both books for my daughters Xmas gifts.
A fabulous book

This is a great Australian novel. There are so many twists and turns in the story. It keeps you guessing until the end. I found it a little hard to get into but after that I was literally hooked. Make sure you don't have anything else to do the day you start reading it! I also highly recommend the sequel Yesterday's Dust - both are MUST reads!

"Ann Burton was born on a river bank the night her father tried to burn their house down. Six years later her sister Liza disappears while they are staying at their uncle's property. What Ann sees that day robs her of her memory and speech. Ann escapes her anguished childhood, finding love and a new life away from Mallawindy. But there is no escape from the Burton family and its dark secrets. Ann must return to Mallawindy and confront the past if she is ever to be free."This book has intrigue, mystery and is full of suprises. With a drunken, violent father, a passive, downtrodden mother, and a favoured sister who has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, Anne's life was never going to be anything but difficult. When she witnesses a terrible crime, she is literally struck dumb, and she must fight to keep from being sent to a 'special school'. Though the events of that day have robbed her of her speech, they have not diminished the capacity of her sharp and insightful mind. This book is filled with twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing until the chilling end.
