Hey, I'm a kampung boy. "Kampung" means village in Bahasa Malaysia. I am accustomed to introducing myself this way because I grew up in a small town, Bidor, far away from the metropolitan city of Kuala Lumpur. When I told people I grew up in Bidor, even many locals in Kuala Lumpur (KL) had never heard of it.

I hope you arrived in Malaysia not as a tourist with a single destination in mind, but as a person with a map full of questions and a heart eager to belong. The jet lag faded in a coffee shop near the airport, where the barista spoke in a warm blend of Bahasa Malaysia and English, and strangers' smiles reminded me that hospitality travels well, even when you're not sure which side of the world you're on.

What draws you here isn't a single moment or a single reason. It's a constellation of everyday truths-the warmth that settles into conversations as they drift from weather to family, to food, to the small rituals that mark everyday life. In Bidor, I learned how the folks gather at the kopitiam sign at dawn, the taste of roti canai cooling on a plate, and the steady rhythm of tai chi in the morning market. In Malaysia, those rhythms are everywhere: a market turning into a family gathering, children playing in the open fields, and a neighbor inviting you to share a plate of home-cooked dishes.
