Ideal for Faith Sharing

I've never looked upon feminism and Christianity as incompatible, but after reading Elizabeth Dreyer's latest book I see them as not only compatible but also complementary. Take the chapter on asceticism, for example. In ancient Greece, "asceticism" referred to physical training. But as Christianity took hold in the first century, the definition was broadened to include mental, spiritual, and ethical development. Dreyer further expands the definition to embrace relational and sociopolitical realms in which asceticism can result in increased sensitivity, compassion, and solidarity with the poor. She presents today's ascetic not as a "thin, gray-cloaked monk with solemn visage and sunken cheeks," but as a woman responding creatively and lovingly to the demands of family, job, and community. She explains that "women and men who struggle to live in the truth, face illness and aging with courage and grace, and die to self in parenting are models for all of us. As women of the church, we are called to the love embodied in daily asceticism." Other topics in Making Sense of God include grassroots theology, a prayerful, informed, reflection on our lives in light of the loving presence of God; sacramental consciousness; and the Trinity. With reflection questions after each chapter and several suggestions for rituals, this book would be ideal for a retreat or faith-sharing group. It is the first volume of the Called to Holiness series on spirituality for Catholic women. Seven more titles are planned.
