The Good Old Way

You can learn more than you think from Sam Allen. Written in 1986, learn how the experts who valued quality over time saving techniques. Learn the right way and from a real pro, and understand why you must do things the right way.

Good background for the novice

The other reviewer found this book outdated, and perhaps it is not for an intermediate or advanced woodworker. But I found it very helpful in explaining the basics for a novice. The introductory chapters on grades of wood, reading plans, etc. give a lot more background information than most other beginning woodworking books I've looked at. The book also discusses the differences between working with wood, plywood, and particle board. I like the fact that it tells how to do things using hand tools (for those of us who can't afford to spend thousands of dollars for a shop full of power tools in order to begin our first project). The book also explains how to make joints using several different kinds of tools. The book is easy to read, but could have more figures/pictures for some techniques. I would recommend it for anyone who is just starting out in woodworking.
