This is the first volume (of three volumes) of the story of the German boy who will grow into manhood, Manfred Kaiter who marries Buddy Holly's sister, Patricia. This volume shows Manny, from age 8 to age 11, when his father, Oscar, escapes from Germany, leaving his family behind, as he flees a Nazi hit squad. In 1945, during the fiercest allied fire bombing of Berlin, Manny was buried alive in a basement bomb shelter. After his escape, he is strafed by a Russian fighter plane as he hides in an outhouse. He and his family flee East Germany, in a firetruck, ahead of Joseph Stalin's rapacious communist soldiers. They must cross the Oder river before the Russians attack. They are stymied at every turn as they try to make it to safety at Castle Willigrad. Some German words and names and names of places are used. Volume two shows Manny from age 12 to age 17 as his father returns. His father attempts to lead his family back to their home in Oberhof, near the Polish Border, while facing staggering opposition . In spite of all his efforts to take his family to safety, Oscar offends his communist overlords and has to flee, this time with his family, to Sweden.Volume three shows Manny from age 17 onward. He graduates from a stone mason's school and moves to Russian held East Berlin. He speaks Russian and secures a job for himself and his crew. Tey are to lay bri0ck for a Russian government building. With spies every where, he and his crew are asked to spy for Western Intelligence.. They are asked to steal the architectural plans for the Russian building. The Russian KGB learns of their efforts, Manny and his crew set out crew flee to West Berlin. They are not entirely successful. Manny eventually makes it to West Berlin. He eventually immigrates to Eastern Canada, and after a time to the Eastern United States. In America he learns to speak English from an Italian brick layer. He travels to the West Coast of the US. Then he moves to Lubbock Texas where he starts his own business and meets Patricia Holly, Buddy's Sister.
