Beware of the Zeffers whose eyes glow blue. "Darren says that you can tell someone hasn't been drinking the water when the whites of their eyes turn blue. Some think Hovast can cure them and some think not. Sometimes they go a little crazy, too. They become known as Zeffers." Zeffers aren't the only thing Lira and Carlos and their friends will need to beware of as they begin their journey out of the pine-covered Valley of Arrival and toward the granite mountain from whence the stream flows. Their only true guide is the words on the wall where they woke: "Wake up and make the journey! Drink the water. Follow the water. Help as many as you can." Lira lingers in the valley waiting for a small boy she wishes to protect, but when she learns that her desire to help others may be backfiring, she leaves the valley without him and the guilt makes her wish to help no one else nor lead anyone ever again. Carlos follows Lira but will need to find his own reasons for the journey or he will stay in Tanis's City and lose Lira forever. Carlos will need to decide who to trust and Lira will need to lead again and they will need to do it quickly. The whites of their own eyes have started to turn blue.
