There's room for you, too.
Ember has a stone by the water that keeps the warm long after the sun has gone, a smooth place on the fallen oak beside Eli, and a path to the shallows he walks in the proper order every morning. All through the autumn and the winter these places have become his.
Then one morning there are wet prints across the stone - five toes with webs between them - and an otter lying in the middle of them who moves over at once and says there is room.
Ember does not get on.
He is perfectly polite about it, and perfectly fair. There are other stones. The far bank suits otters better. The shallows are best in the morning. Puddle goes cheerfully wherever he is sent, and by the end of the week Ember has kept everything he wanted.
It is not until Eli shifts along the trunk one evening, and pats the bark on either side of himself, that Ember begins to see what his arrangements have cost.
He did not want his stone back. He had his stone. He wanted the other thing.
Make Room, Little Fox is the sixth Eli & Ember story - a warm, funny, read-aloud chapter book about welcome, and about the quiet cost of keeping everything just as it was.
