Darcy Liao's debut novel is an absolute gem!

It brings together two women who seem as if they couldn't be more different, Mira, a shy, Ph.D student freshly out of an abusive relationship, and Isabel, a tough as nails electrician, who is closed off and drowning in grief. They come together by chance one night, when Mira is being harassed by her abusive ex-boyfriend and his friends. Isabel sees them ganging up on her from across the street and rushes over to rescue her from that dangerous situation. Isabel brings Mira back to her apartment to keep her safe that night, and as they talk they find out that Mira needs a place to stay after leaving her ex and Isabel has an open room, and needs help with the rent. They decide to become roommates to help each other. They are both closed off in their own ways, because of traumas of their pasts, Mira having been at the mercy of her abusive ex for the last two years because he was rich and she was a poor, trans grad student, and Isabel has yet to deal with the loss of her older sister and the subsequent ending of her years long relationship. But due to the forced proximity of being roommates, they are soon forced to interact, and learn they have more in common than they knew. Mira is trying to unionize her fellow grad students, and Isabel has experience in unionizing her electrician's union. They also have complimenting skills that help each other grow and as they become closer, feelings start growing and threatening to ruin the great thing they had built. Will feelings be confessed? Will past traumas reemerge and destroy everything? Is there a chance that they could really be together? The answers are a delight to discover in Make Room for Love!
