Common sense - sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts - is becoming harder and harder to find these days. In the United States, basic reasoning skills have become so diminished that nearly all aspects of life are impacted - social, professional, romantic - in increasingly dangerous ways. Our quality of life is severely affected, families are divided, and countless individuals feel isolated and emotionally strained.
Some argue that Americans simply don't think critically. Although I wholeheartedly agree, I also believe that Americans are not ready to think critically. So, instead of presenting yet another critical thinking textbook, I offer an exploration of what prevents Americans from seeing, whether we like it or not, we're all in this together. Common sense is the road we use to 'travel' safely as a society. But over time, that road has filled with potholes, faded signs, and non-operational signals. Roadblocks have been erected to detour individuals from serviceable, worthwhile, and rational paths.Make America Think Again begins at the roadblock to finding basic common ground - resistance to unfamiliar ideas/activities. It moves on to explore the familiar routes that bring us to impasse - the habits and abilities that make up one's daily life. And ends with a fresh look at the road ahead of us - availabilities.
This approach gets the average American ready to think critically. It is a concise invitation for Americans to consider, recognize, and implement detours away from the shortsightedness, reactivity, and defensiveness fueling various interpersonal AND national issues that significantly shape our lives.
Understanding the concepts covered and completing the activities provided will make conversations easier and more productive, reduce confusion, uncover options for problem-solving, and produce various other life-improving outcomes.
